Picnic at the Rabbit Hole, Sussex Square Gardens

We will be hosting an Alice in Wonderland themed picnic in the private Kemp Town Enclosures on Sunday 27th May from 12pm onwards.  Come and play a game of Queen of Hearts croquet, dare to sample the ‘Eat Me’ and ‘Drink Me’ refreshments and venture down the tunnel, said to have inspired Lewis Carroll’s rabbit hole in the story.

Read it!

And spot the layers of possible meanings: apparently there are references to colonialism, eating disorders, drug trips, mystical religions and penis envy!

Play Croquet

Maybe not with flamingoes, hedgehogs and playing cards, but still a fun, quirky game

Alice in Wonderland – Taste

Here are the things we are tasting related to ‘Alice in Wonderland‘. Please share your suggestions below…

Jam Tarts

Who stole the Queen of Hearts’ jam tarts? Alice attends the trial and ends up the accused. A vital accompaniment to a mad hatters tea party…

jame tart

Mock Turtle soup

Alice’s friend, the Mock Turtle, is a reference to a copycat soup, a Victorian delicacy made out of calves heads.  This version is a bit less gruesome and you could always use Quorn!

Cheshire Cat Cocktail

‘We’re all mad here’ says the Cheshire Cat. And then shakes, stirs, strains to create a vivid technicolour cocktail to help you on the way…

cheshire cat

Lobster Quadrille

‘Will you, won’t you, will you, won’t you, join the dance?’ Or at least eat the recipe?

Magical Meringue Mushrooms

Try a small bite of these meringue mushrooms, and beware as you eat, you may shrink or grow a few inches afterwards….

Alice in Wonderland shot

A drink that takes only a minute or so to make, but the effects will last considerably longer!

Marmalade Mimosa

Alice pines for the marmalade in the jar.  Fear not, it has been mimosa’d into a cocktail: just a mix of Grand Marnier, orange juice and champagne will send anyone down the rabbit hole.

Mad Hatter salad

A mad mix of coleslaw, broccoli, green onions, ramen noodles, almonds and cider vinegar can fit any picnic or tea party for health and hilarity.
